What to drink this summer: Part 1
As the warmer months are upon us, palettes turn to lighter, more thirst quenching fare. But are we cursed to guzzle Coronas, super sweet dressed up wine coolers from a can, or “Light” beers? In the “What to drink this summer” series we will offer some alternatives to the usual, and sun-poison your taste buds with options.

Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) 2011/2010...
Having reviewed the 2011 KBS already on draft, it is time to compare this legendary imperial stout against some other barrel aged beers as well as against the 2010 vintage. Does a beer that is already cave aged an entire year fade away after another year in the bottle? Does the KBS in the bottle live up to the promise of being one of the most flavorful, indulgent beers on the planet? For these...

Criminally Good: Australian Craft Beer Review Part...
Calling part one of the this series a “craft beer review” is a little like publishing a critical analysis of the works of Wes Anderson, having viewed only Fantastic Mr. Fox. That said, the “low-carb” and “dry” mass marketed choices offered to me with pride as a “Taste of Australia” were our true—if disappointing—introduction to the...

Low Carb Mate!: Australian Craft Beer Review Part...
Aussies Love Low Carb
Sadly this is so. At many establishments, including high quality restaurants and even one beer worshipping bar, I was offered with pride a Pure Blonde Light or XXXX Gold Lager. While there is a strong prejudice against American “Light” beers down under, the majority of people are in love with almost the same flavor profile in their most popular beers.

Founders KBS on Tap Part 2
Is it an imperial stout when it’s cave aged it bourbon barrels for a year? Who cares. Founders Kentucky Bourbon Stout is perhaps the best improvement ever to strike a classic style. Attempts to ramp up ABV and flavor for Katherine the Great may or may not have originated the Imperial Stout style, but Americans, especially Goose Island, have modified this style by adding cocoa nibs, vanilla...

American Double IPA Tasting 2011
Dave scored some fresh Pliny the Elder (!!!) from a generous friend in California so we decided to taste it with a few other beers that also fancy themselves double (imperial) American IPAs. ADIPAs are hop forward pale ales with increased alcohol and hops, usually coming in between 8% and 10% ABV. All craft beers were tasted blind in vertical, from individual virgin SOHO cups.

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA (Cali-België)
Beer: Cali-Belgique IPA
Brewer: Stone Brewing
Local: At home in an old-school GLBC Christmas Ale snifter
ABV: 6.9%
Date: March 19, 2011
Hugely different from Stone’s usual IPA on which it is based, this 6.9% ABV is an interesting twist on a craft beer staple. A Belgian yeast strain has been used which completely changes the beer from nose forward. Looks golden orange and smells like...

Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) on Draft
Just a shot of the rare beer in the wild at Strongsville Ohio’s Brew Kettle. Founder’s buzz-inducing, cave aged Imperial Stout is dangerously smooth at 11.2% ABV.
We will give a full review in a blind taste test up against a ‘10, a Brooklyn Black OPs, and who knows what else.
